I started out the weekend early and headed out to San Diego. I reconsidered many times due to the flu scare, but I'm so glad I didn't let my fear hold me back. So grab a cup of tea and a biscuit...because you will be very hungry when we're through!
Friday:
The morning started out beautiful so Chelsi took me to breakfast at The Cottage in La Jolla (when I just linked to the site I saw the french toast...yum. Maybe next time). We reminisced a bit, and eaves dropped on some ladies conversation. One claims she's a writer for yelp*...isn't review based? I'm confused...anyhoo...Then we went to the La Jolla Cove to check out the beach. It was beautiful. I love how different the sand is at every beach.

Eggs Benedict with Procuitto and Tomato

Later we headed to the Rancho Bernardo Inn for Chelsi's work party. Of course the sun went away and it got a little chilly, but the setting was beautiful and the drinks were plenty. I love work events for this reason. Tipsy co-workers, even when they're not your own, are a blast. Hilarious group.

Me and Chels
We headed out early to go to dinner with Chelsi's boyfriend Zach. We had a great sunset and an excellent dinner at Jake's Del Mar. I had the hearts of palm salad and pecan encrusted bass on Chelsi's recommendation. Delish. Please try it if you ever find yourself here. After dinner we went for a quick drink and then decided we were too tired for much else. We caught a cab home where we had an interesting conversation with the cabbie. His was from Turkey, his mom was a Turk and his dad was a Kurd. He has a 6 year old and is divorced. It was a long cab ride.
Hearts of palm salad with hazelnuts and basil dressing
Pecan encrused seabass with shrimp couscous...the couscous people...was AMAZING
Zach and the hula pie
Saturday:
We went back to the Rancho Bernardo Inn for massages, thank you again Chelsi it was fantastic! Then went to Encinitas for lunch at Mozy's Cafe for banana burritos. WTF? I know I thought the same thing but they were really good. They were essentially chicken burritos with black beans, avocado, Monterrey jack cheese and plantains...am I missing anything? Definitely something I need to try to recreate. Also they had lots of pico de gallo...and I am a pico freak.

Cute house in Encinitas....added to dream home list
We went back to Chelsi's house and did exactly as we did in college. We watched TV (cooking shows) and flipped through cookbooks. What that's not what you did in college? You have to understand that me and my roomies were total foodies. We used our student loan checks to eat stinky cheeses, stuffed beef tenderloin and host appetizer nights. Forget ramen noodles. I didn't last long after that massage and passed out during the intro to The Barefoot Contessa (wait now I think we were watching Bride Wars). And wouldn't you know it, while I was napping the sun came out. Oh well.
We opted for a low key night half because we were still exhausted and half because I didn't want a hangover on the plane ride home. We took Zach dinner at the military base where we got to mingle with the F18's (photos HERE).
Thanks for the tour Zach!

Chelsi breaking one of our 3 rules of dating (Mike or Matt/Military/Morman...but I do love the Mormans...I read mostly Morman blogs)

Then we headed back out to La Jolla for dinner at the cutest little restaurant Piatti. We got a patio seat without a reservation after I smacked the host while we were waiting for a table. I tend to flail my arms when I talk. We gorged ourselves. I was convinced I had a tapeworm because I was puttin' down.

Balsamic roasted tomatoes with chevre and basil
Saffron Shrimp Scampi
Ricotta basil ravioli

Tiramisu!
We ended the night with another wedding movie (I like weddings, there I said it) Rachel Getting Married. Recommended folks, if you like depressing movies with splatters of happiness thrown in, which I do.
Sunday:
Plane ride home was uneventful. One of the best things about taking a vacation without your husband is coming home to him. Bryan had the house vacuumed and mopped with flowers on the table. Thank you B, I missed you too! I didn't buy anything except for food my whole trip...can you believe it? I did pick up some shells from the beach though. I don't think Issy cared much for my gift.

There you go people. My trip to San Diego. Thanks again Chelsi for having me! I had a lot of fun and can't wait to come back....hopefully before another 4 years pass. Woohee how time flies. Hope everyone had a great weekend too and got to see a little sunshine. I'm already cold again.
