Flashback Friday: Le Premier Août

It is entirely possible we were given wine on this night.  Explains a lot doesn't it?

August 1st marks the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.  We will be celebrating with lots of cheese, wine, 2 Suisse and a handful of Frenchies.  It should be fabulous!

What will you do this weekend?

Renton River Days

It's parade season.  This is my second this summer already.  I didn't show the first one because it was all tractors.  I didn't want to make you suffer.  But suffer you will today...for my family's sake.  Emailing them the photos would be too easy.

Here we are.  Grammy saved us all prime seats.  She carried 6 folding chairs by herself!  I was impressed.  She is 90 after all and it was about 90 degrees!

101 simple summer meals, ready in 10 minutes or less

Photobucket

This isn't one of them...but you can find the recipe HERE.

It is finally warm here.  I've been waiting all year for sun and now I can't function.  Let alone cook.  I don't know about you, but I can always use some quick recipe ideas.  Some time back I came across an article in the New York Times with 101 simple summer meals.  We don't even have that many sunny days in Washington.

Here are some of my favorites.  The perfect quick, light meal when you just can't bother to cook.

1. Make six-minute eggs: simmer gently, run under cold water until cool, then peel. Serve over steamed asparagus.

3. Cut eight sea scallops into four horizontal slices each. Arrange on plates. Sprinkle with lime juice, salt and crushed chilies; serve after five minutes.

5. Put three pounds of washed mussels in a pot with half a cup of white wine, garlic cloves, basil leaves and chopped tomatoes. Steam until mussels open. Serve with bread

6. Heat a quarter-inch of olive oil in a skillet. Dredge flounder or sole fillets in flour and fry until crisp, about two minutes a side. Serve on sliced bread with tartar sauce.

8. Put a few dozen washed littlenecks in a large, hot skillet with olive oil. When clams begin to open, add a tablespoon or two of chopped garlic. When most or all are opened, add parsley. Serve alone, with bread or over angel-hair pasta.

9. Pan-grill a skirt steak for three or four minutes a side. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, slice and serve over romaine or any other green salad, drizzled with olive oil and lemon.

14. Put a few slices of chopped prosciutto in a skillet with olive oil, a couple of cloves of crushed garlic and a bit of butter; a minute later, toss in about half a cup bread crumbs and red chili flakes to taste. Serve over pasta with chopped parsley.

15. Call it panini: Grilled cheese with prosciutto, tomatoes, thyme or basil leaves.

20. Cut eggplant into half-inch slices. Broil with lots of olive oil, turning once, until tender and browned. Top with crumbled goat or feta cheese and broil another 20 seconds

22. Make wraps of tuna, warm white beans, a drizzle of olive oil and lettuce and tomato.

28. New Joe’s Special, from San Francisco: Brown ground meat with minced garlic and chopped onion. When just about cooked, add chopped spinach and cook, stirring, until wilted. At the last minute, stir in two eggs, along with grated Parmesan and salt and pepper.

29. Chop prosciutto and crisp it in a skillet with olive oil; add chopped not-too-ripe figs. Serve over greens dressed with oil and vinegar; top all with crumbled blue cheese.

37. Frisée aux lardons: Cook chunks of bacon in a skillet. Meanwhile, make six-minute or poached eggs and a frisée salad. Put eggs on top of salad along with bacon; deglaze pan with sherry vinegar and pour pan juices over all.

53. Put a tablespoon of cream and a slice of tomato in each of several small ramekins. Top with an egg, then salt, pepper and grated Parmesan. Bake at 350 degrees until the eggs set. Serve with toast.

71. Press a lot of coarsely ground black pepper onto both sides of filet mignon or other steaks or chopped meat patties. Brown in butter in a skillet for two minutes a side. Remove steaks and add a splash of red wine, chopped shallots and a bit of tarragon to skillet. Reduce, then return steaks to pan, turning in the sauce for a minute or two.

74. Canned sardines packed in olive oil on Triscuits, with mustard and Tabasco.

78. Cook shrimp in a skillet slowly (five minutes or so) to preserve their juices, with plenty of garlic and olive oil, until done; pour over watercress or arugula, with lemon, pepper and salt.

84. Cook chopped tomatillos with a little water or stock, cilantro and a little minced fresh chili; serve over grilled, broiled or sautéed chicken breasts, with corn tortillas.

90. Thai-style beef: Thinly slice one and a half pounds of flank steak, pork shoulder or boneless chicken; heat peanut oil in a skillet, add meat and stir. A minute later, add a tablespoon minced garlic and some red chili flakes. Add 30 clean basil leaves, a quarter cup of water and a tablespoon or two of soy sauce or nam pla. Serve with lime juice and more chili flakes, over rice or salad.

100. Cook red lentils in water with a little cumin and chopped bacon until soft. Top with poached or six-minute eggs (run under cold water until cool before peeling) and a little sherry vinegar.

One of our favorites, that takes more than 10 minutes, is artichokes.  Issy likes them too.

I swear my Husband owns other shirts...

Okay now you try the rest and report back! See all 101 HERE.

Hot Tamales

Photobucket

I love tamales.  Sometimes at Mexican restaurants I just order a side tamale with guacamole and salsa.  So good!  Recently a friend shared with me that there is a little hole in the wall Mexican joint in Issaquah that makes its own tamales.  But only on Saturdays.  So of course, Saturday we went.  I must say, they were delicious and only $1.79 each!  Whoo hoo!

Check them out if you're in the area. Taqueria La Venadita. Lucky for me Saturday happens once every week!

What did you eat this weekend?

Flashback Friday: Let's go to Victoria with Princess Marguerite

Do you remember that song?  I don't even know what it is from.  I feel like there was marching or something though.  Anyhoo.  I went to Victoria B.C. once.  When I was a wee lassie.  See...

Weren't we a stylish crew?
I'd totally wear that unitard my Mom was wearing.
No seriously I would.

I don't really remember it.  It would be nice to go back.

My family went on Wednesday for my Grandma's 82nd birthday.  They didn't invite me.  But my Mom took some lovely photos and wanted me to share them with you.  I think she just wanted to rub it in my face.  She's getting creative with the camera.  I think she gets it from me.

They took the Victoria Clipper up from Seattle.  That would have been nice, wish I could've gone...

Hope you have a fantastic weekend.  If you go to Victoria, will you invite me?

I've got nothing...okay maybe a few things

First off, have you signed on to your Facebook account and voted for LiLu yet?  Today is the last day to vote and if you haven't, I would be eternally grateful if you would.  What if you were in the running for a one year contract with MTV, $100,000 salary and a chance to move to New York.  You'd want some random strangers vote right? Exactly, see I knew what you were going to say.  So go HERE, and just do it already!  Mom?  Have you done it yet?  Yep my Mom's on Facebook.  She's hip like that.

Secondly, Krysten over at After 'I Do' tagged me to answer 8 questions over at her blog.  She had to answer questions about sexy stuff and I was all ramped up to share my sex life on the interwebs but lucky for you she came up with 8 other questions for her group to answer.  Phew!

1. What is your favorite thing to have for breakfast?  Um...lately it has been a smoothie.  But if I were on vacation it would be croissants with Nutella...or jam.  AND eggs benedict.

2. What is for favorite thing to have for dinner?  I don't really have a favorite food, and I go through stages of what my favorite food is.  Today I would have to say eggplant parmigiana.  I LOVE marinara sauce.

3. What is your absolutely all time favorite dessert?  Brownies and ice cream or cookies and cream ice cream.  AND Nutella.

4. What would you consider your food "specialty"?  Food.  That's a specialty isn't it?  I guess baking?  Only because it usually turns out.

5. Favorite restaurant?  Kingfish Cafe in Capitol Hill

6. What food do you absolutely hate to eat?  Endives.  Honestly I can eat anything else.

7. What food do you absolutely love to eat?  Pickled green beans!

8. Would you consider yourself a picky eater or someone who will try anything once?  I will try anything once, twice...three times a lady.

Thirdly...it's a word.  I checked.

My Sister in Law Chelsea from In a Yellow House gave me an award of my choice.  So I'm picking The Fabulous Sugar Doll award because it baffles me.  What is a fabulous sugar doll?  I will do my best to pick a few peeps who I consider Fabulous Sugar Dolls.  I hope this is not a derogatory term.

Connie @ Sogni e Sorrisi
Sheree @ The G6
M.A ;) @ Inkt
Chelsea @ In a Yellow House  - That's right...I'm double sugar dolling you

So friends, take this award and then answer my questions k?  Yep, I'm two timing you.  Wait, that's not the right word.  I'd actually like to know all these things about my readers.  Play along if you'd like!

1.  If you could have any job in the world and it made $1 million a year, what would it be?

2.  If you could move anywhere in the world, and move all your family and friends with you, where would you go?

3.  What smell makes you gag?

4.  If you were having lunch with Lindsay Lohan or Bill Clinton today, what would you say to her/him?

5.  What is your favorite childhood memory?

6.  If someone offered you $5 million for your pet, would you sell it?

7.  What is your go to dish when you're having friends over for dinner?

8.  If you could buy one new thing today of any value, what would it be?

Okay, make sure you proudly display your Fabulous Sugar Doll badge...don't be scared now ;)

And... because I think sex is funny...Mothers and other family members turn away:

Me:  When are you going to bed?

Bryan:  I don't know, sometime in the near future.

Me:  I was thinking of taking the dogs for a W-A-L-K.

Bryan:  I thought we were going to have S-E-X.

Me:  Why did you spell that out?  The dogs don't know what it is.

Sorry...I couldn't not share.

Cannon Beach Cottages

One of my favorite things about the beach is the cute little cottages.  Some of the best ones aren't even on the beach, they're tucked away from the storms down the presidential streets.  I'm a sucker for classic weathered shake, but there are so many others to see.  On our way out of town I snuck a few shots of some interesting ones.

Last year we took a tour of some select cottages that were open to the public for the day.  Most were very rustic, but some were charming dressed in their beach blues and filled with shells and other beach paraphernalia.  The next tour is on September 11th.  If you're in the area you should check it out.  Buy tickets and find information HERE.

Some homes haven't been so lucky.  Here is one that sits above the beach near Arch Cape.  Bryan decided to give himself a tour.

Vintage cake toppers

Photobucket

I didn't have a wedding cake, but if I did I know exactly what kind I would have.  A banana cake filled with caramelized bananas, chocolate ganache and caramel butter cream frosting from HERE.  But why limit yourself to one?  Dessert buffets are becoming more and more popular.  Check out this cake buffet from Project Wedding.  I think the vintage cake toppers take the cake!

You can make your own cake stands using thrifted candlestick holders, paint, plates and epoxy.  Jenifer of Gordon Gossip has the directions on her blog.  Check them out HERE!

Back to the beach

This weekend we took a quick trip to the beach to spend the weekend with Bryan's Mom and Sister.  I was definitely in need of a long walk on the beach and a glass of wine.

Thanks for all your kinds words in regards to my crazy week.  It wasn't that bad, I really shouldn't complain.  It involved me breaking a few items, being late to work every day, one of my dogs attacking a cat and the other dropping a piece of poop on my arm. Combined it was a nervous break down.  I know, it doesn't take much...but the week would not end.  But alas it did, and now I'm back to Monday.  Lovely.
