I'm going to Europe!

Well, tickets haven't been bought or anything but I cleaned out the attic by Bryan's due date so he's running out of reasons to tell me no.  I condensed some of my boxes of crap and threw out a ton of memorabilia.  You should see some of the stuff I hung on to.  Movie ticket stubs, old valentines...Devon Sawa and Leonardo DiCaprio posters!  I threw them all out.  Of course I looked at every little thing first so it took me all day.

There were some hilarious notes from friends discussing boys, and who they would ask to dances.  I think if I showed them now they would be embarrassed.  I think if they showed me the same I'd be embarrassed too.  I  kept a few, along with a poem someone wrote me and a song someone wrote me.  Wow!  I miss those teenage expressions of love.  I remember reading them with my heart beating so fast, butterflies in my stomach.  Your friends always reporting back that so and so was asking about you, and has a crush on you.

When Bryan and I decided to get back together (that's right, he broke up with me and came crawling back ;) his girlfriend and I were headed to hang out and she was totally selling him to me.  She said how sweet he was, and that he makes mixed tapes and writes poems.  Do you think I ever got a mixed tape?  Ahem I think someone owes me one...9 years later!

The other night in bed though he had my heart beating fast again ;)  I was dreaming he was about to get run over by a train and I was trying to drag him out of the way.  I'm pretty sure I was out of bed pulling him by his arm to my side of the bed when I woke up.  He doesn't remember it, but I woke up out of bed with heart pounding.  I did save him in the end, but then he rolled back over to his side.  So unappreciative.

Anyway.  The one thing I didn't know what to do with was this box of pointe shoes.  I'm not sure I'm ready to part with them.  I know I should just keep one pair and toss the rest but they're so pretty and have so many memories attached.   As I sifted through them I remembered getting my first pair.  They were Blochs, and I wanted Capezio.  I wanted tiny narrow feet and slim pointe shoes but Bloch's were a bit wider.  I even stopped wearing Birkenstocks because someone told me my feet would spread, so I stuck to structured shoes.  Crazy talk I know, but for some reason I thought the narrow ones were prettier.  Funny the things we worried about that don't matter anymore.  And funny the things we still worry about that don't matter.

What would you do with a box of these?

I am considering hanging on to them until I have a bigger house.  Then I'll pair them up in a huge black shadow box, or just a frame and hang them on my wall like a large art installation.

Sort of like this but with more:

What do you think?

  2. Europe.. fantastic indeed! I'm not much on keeping things but I would totally keep these. I'm thinking something like this? Not sure if you guys are having kids but in a daughter's room this would be cool. Even if you aren't -- I like the idea. Check it out..

  4. DEFINITELY! Do a picture frame or a shadow box. Don't throw them out if you have space to keep them. I kept my very last pair and my Veruka Salt pair (the ones I had to dye black). She was my first of three snotty girl parts I got to play over the years and those were the only shoes I ever had to dye a different color so they were special. I think Emma will think it's cool to see her mom's old shoes (you know, later on when she's as obsessed with dance as we all were). :) So ... I totally think you should work on wall art with your shoes. I think you would LOVE it and not only will it look so cool, but it will be so meaningful because those shoes were such a huge part of your past. And I always say, once a dancer always a dancer ... even if it's just in our hearts now and not so much outwardly evident as it used to be. :) Not to sound cheesy. If you do something with the shoes, make sure to post about it again, please!

  6. I'm so excited you finally are getting your trip to Europe! I need to work on Westin! I would definitely hang onto those pointe shoes. You may need to hang them up in your little girl's room some day:)

  7. Yay for Spring cleaning & Europe! If you have this much hesitation, keep the pointe shoes. You got rid of enough stuff already. Revisit it again next Spring & see if you still feel the same way.

  8. Yea for Europe! I would keep the shoes, I mean how much space are they really taking up and I bet you would regret getting rid of them. They would at least be cute hanging in a little girl's room. I am having major blog de ja vu about the box of shoes, have you posted this before?

  9. Devon Sawa ... I remember the first time I saw him was in "Casper" when I was in 3rd grade. It was my first memory of being aroused hahahahaha

Definitely keep those shoes! When you first mentioned them the first thing I thought was "shadow box"!!

  10. Great idea! I always loved the look of point shoes! It would be a nice way to still keep them around but as art!

And I was definately into Devon Sawa and Leo. You are not alone.

  11. Yea i remember finding my ballerina shoes.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

By ballerina shoes I mean I found the old steel toed boots I used to wear when I was working at the dog food factory, and they still had congealed dried powdered blood all over them.

Fun Fact: Girls past things are better.

  12. So many things to comment on! First, I loved this sentence: "Funny the things we worried about that don't matter anymore. And funny the things we still worry about that don't matter." Yes, yes. You are so wise beyond your years. Unfortunate we can't all call it in the moment! The notes from your friends...I seriously hope mine are all burned and I'll do the same for my friends. Teenage girls are irrational and embarrassing, no? Next, I'm so excited that you are going to Europe. I know you've wanted to go for some time. Fourth, I was going to suggest a shadow box of some type for your ballet shoes. Great minds think alike. It took me about ten seconds to realize you had already thought of the idea. Here I am, thinking I am such a creative genius. Just kidding. Last: I need to hear more of the break-up story and how you were friends with his girlfriend. I love me a good relationship story.

After this short novella, I bid you adieu.

  13. I LOVE the idea of framing them or tying them to something feminine and letting them dangle down together.

  14. Oh my word. I still have letters fro high school, too. It's so funny the things we used to stress about back then, right? But of course in high school, it was BIG news that a guy asked about you.:) I kept some of the letters from my friends to use later for blackmail, if need be ;-)

And those point shoes. KEEP them!!! Seriously.

keep the pointe shoes, I have faith you can do something creative and lovely with them! maybe even for your (on-the-way) niece or another baby girl (maybe yours) ;)

in other news, we got rid of a lot of stuff when we moved too but I know that I have a TON of stuff still in my moms house in florida like that....

  18. Oh my god, I totally forgot Devon Sawa existed until this moment! I was a bit older when he became popular, but I definitely thought he was cute in Now & Then, and I DEFINITELY remember him being on the cover of every teeny bopper magazine. Wow, memories.

    Yay for Europe!

  19. i think that is a cute idea! :D and he better take you to europe --- to make up for not giving you your mixed tape. ;)

p.s. i sooo totally loved devon sawa. back when there were no dvds and scene selection, my sister and i would always watch casper over and over again even if we have to go through the whole movie each time, just to see devon sawa as casper. haha. ;)

  21. So strange that we went through the same junk at the same time! SPring cleaning come early i guess. It is pretty funny and embarassing going through those old highschool letters and notes. I also have a box of tap shoes.. Maybe I could make a wind chime?!

I like the shadow box with your 3 select favorites in it though. I think it would be a good way to save a memory.
